“At times our lives seem like that of a tranquil island in a sea of chaos. The battle is to keep this sea of chaos at bay and not let it wash us away into utter chaos.” – Sanjeeva Ananthan

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mohandas Gandhi

I’m not a vegetarian and I doubt that I would ever give up meat, but I still feel sympathy toward animals that are abused and killed for our fur coats and entertainment. I feel like a hypocrite because I know the chicken I eat are from factories that abuse and confine their animals and the milk I drink are from cows that are overpumped and hormone-ridden.
I imagine what would happen if the roles were reversed, and it was humans that were the “animals” on the dinner plates. What if some other higher intellectual being used our skin for their clothes? How awful would we view those who kill us for their entertainment. If this day were to ever come, we humans can’t really blame anyone but ourselves…because we were really no different.
Either way, I am a hypocrite because I eat meat. I don’t feel guilty for eating meat either. I am just aware that we are fortunate to be in the top of the food chain. I just hope we humans can become a more compassionate leader in this food chain. I understand that humans will always continue to consume animals for survival; I just hope we only use these animals for survival, not for reasons that are not essential, such as clothing and entertainment.
I don’t know though…this issue is difficult. I know cats and dogs have many privileged rights and protection in many countries, but in this blog post, I am talking about other animals, such as pigs, cows, chickens, etc.
